Paraguay Residency: Your Path to Official Residence

Paraguay offers one of the clearest and most accessible residency processes worldwide. Temporary or permanent residence permits, predictable timelines and manageable documentation make the first step concrete and realistic — provided preparation and timing are right.

Temporary and permanent residency

The standard path starts with temporary residency — valid for up to two years, renewable, and the foundation for permanent residence. Even with the temporary carnet you can open a bank account, register your RUC and establish tax residency. Permanent residency follows after approximately 21 months and opens up long-term planning certainty.

Documents and apostille

For the application you need an apostilled birth certificate, a current criminal record check (valid for six months maximum) and a passport with sufficient remaining validity. All documents must be translated into Spanish and officially certified. Timing is critical — an expired document can delay the entire process.

After arrival, the application is submitted through the Dirección General de Migraciones. The process includes biometric registration, background verification and carnet issuance. With an experienced agent on-site, the process can be compressed to a few weeks.

What a residency agent actually delivers

A professional agent coordinates appointments, translates, accompanies you through bureaucratic processes and knows current processing times. This saves weeks and avoids formal errors that, in the worst case, require a complete resubmission. Hola Asunción works with vetted partners on the ground.

Frequently asked questions

For temporary residency, Paraguay requires no proof of assets and no investment obligation. However, evidence of regular income can speed up the bank account opening process.

With professional guidance, temporary residency typically takes four to eight weeks from submission. Without support, the process can take considerably longer.

Documents can be prepared in advance, but personal presence in Asunción is required for biometric registration and the final application.

The carnet is the residence permit issued by the migration authority. The cédula is the Paraguayan national ID, which can only be applied for after receiving the carnet — and is essential for banking, RUC registration and daily life.
